Berberov, Burhan A.
Kavkaz Forum. 2025. Issue 22.
Abstract:

The purpose of the present study is to establish the functional role of artistic images in Karachay-Balkar folk songs about love. The objectives of the article include collecting and systematizing key images, revealing the range of their meanings, as well as generalizing the studied material. To achieve this goal, the author compiled a collection of Karachay-Balkar love songs. The following specific works were in the focus of the study – «Clouds float like a herd across the sky», «Aktamak», «Aizhayak», «Let me see», «Kulina», «Song about Ali», «A guy in a calpac», «Taukan», «Song about Abdul-Kerim», «I gave him my soul». Their special feature is the anthropocentric principle, predetermined by the male and female names of the main characters. At the second stage, the obtained texts were classified depending on the gender structure of the songs (the love of a young man for a girl or the love of a girl for a young man) and analyzed in order to determine the key artistic images. The findings were aggregated to obtain summary results and interpreted at the third stage of the study. It was found that a wide range of artistic techniques, systematized further in a tabular form, are used to create a rich and deep atmosphere in Karachay-Balkar love songs. The results of the study can be used in the educational sphere when teaching schoolchildren and students the Karachay-Balkar language, and also become a starting point for creating typologically similar analytical works in the context of other languages, including those included in the Turkic group of languages.
