Abstract:

This article examines the formation of the image of the «new mountain woman» through women’s periodicals in the 1920-s and 1930-s. The analysis of specialized periodicals intended for women is presented, on the pages of which the image of the «new mountain woman» was created, formed in the context of the social construct «new Soviet woman». The methodological basis of this research is the method of system analysis, which allowed us to consider, within a given chronological framework, ways of working with the readership as a process of reformatting gender stereotypes and gender roles. In the course of the research, specialized strategies for communicating with the readership were analyzed through which women’s daily life was regulated, a hierarchy of values, positively assessed household practices and new forms of leisure were built. The analysis of materials from the regional women’s periodical press makes it possible to trace the gradual formation of the stereotype of the «new mountain woman», which became a reflection of the socio-political modernizations of the 1920-s and 1930-s. It is concluded that the specialized women’s press, regardless of the strategies used to work with the readership, worked to create propaganda canons of the «new goryanka», forming a circle of correspondents who report on the work done on the pages of newspapers and magazines and broadcasting the necessary information to the masses of women on the formation of new behaviors and values. The image of the «new mountain woman» broadcast through the women’s periodical press becomes an effective form of active involvement of women in the emerging Soviet social space. Mountain women, who initially had a hard time adapting to the new Soviet realities, are gradually becoming active participants in the modernized social space.
